The magnetic dipole moment of a magnet or loop of current may be considered to be a vector consisting of a magnitude and a direction. The magnetic field generated by a magnet points from south to north and is proportional to its magnetic dipole moment. In a loop of current the magnetic dipole moment is a vector that is perpendicular to the loop and can be found using the right-hand-rule. The magnetic dipole moment is a measure of the strength of the magnetic dipole.
