The Main Idea
When an object moves along a surface, a force other than the gravitational, normal, or applied force, is also at play. This force is called friction, which is the force exerted by one surface as it moves over another. For example the resistive force applied to a box as you slide it across a carpet. Friction is a dissipative force that acts parallel and opposite to the direction of motion.
